She sat down with a bump on the dusty ground. The path ahead that she was so sure of was blocked with boulders and fallen trees. Feeling hot tears sting her eyes she wiped them away angrily. Where was everyone? One moment she had been travelling with a cheery band of travellers feeling loved and supported and then suddenly she looked round and they were gone. Just like that! Without a word. And where were her guides who always made her feel so safe? She had been so sure about this road – so sure that it led to the Abbey and to the fulfilment of all her dreams. What had gone wrong? Which way now?
Looking around in confusion she could see she was at a crossroads of many paths. How on earth was she to choose? What if she made another mistake? She had made so many over the last few days and she should have seen them coming – should have known better! She was beginning to feel afraid again – losing the confidence she had fought so hard to win.
“You have freedom to choose another path”
“Who said that?”
“ I did of course. For goodness sake stop feeling so sorry for yourself and look around you. Over here!!”
“Where?”
All she could see was a tiny caterpillar crawling along a blade of grass. Surely not!
“Well put on your glasses and you might see me”
Glasses? Oh those. She had that bag that Le Enchanteur had given her which to tell the truth she had hardly looked at. There were some glasses in there but they were much too small. Pulling them out of the bag she looked at them again.
“Well put them on then. Have a little faith”
As she reluctantly raised them to her eyes, feeling very foolish - fancy trying to get these tiny things on – (honestly, whatever next!) she found that they slipped onto her nose very comfortable and fitted snugly around her ears.
“Now look again”
And she found herself looking eye to eye with the caterpillar and the colours around her were so soft and wonderful she could hardly breathe unless she blew them away.
“You have the freedom to choose another path. Look down the road you were heading. What do you see? What each person sees will be different. What is right for you will not be right for another. That is why you have the illusion of being alone. You must make your own choices.”
“You mean I’m not alone?”
“Of course not. Look around you properly.”
As she looked again she could see the friendly smiling faces of her companions, all following different paths, and waving at her encouragingly.
To be continued.
