Pharmacopoeia

February 2, 2008
Hot Springs
On the beach of Kerith an old woman points to the path that leads to the Kerith Volcano and the Hot Springs that rose from a crack in the crust of the lava from the last eruption. The bubbling source is very hot and sometimes the heat is too much to bear. The springs are the most sociable place in Kerith and healers conduct their business of curing, advice and augary there. Sarika and others like her soak in the hot pools while travellers slip in beside them and tell the troubles in their souls and the ailments in their bodies.

Hot Springs

The path to the springs is busy as younger women carry a literal pharmacopoeia with them. Seeds, pounded and crushed plants tied in bundles, dried hibiscus petals, annatto powder, aloe milk, crushed oyster shells, smartweeds, fiery peppers and a selection of charms.

  1. These images are wonderful and quirky, Heather. What a beautiful healing thing to do, I am fascinated. That you and Lori have done another psychic is nothing short of extraordinary!

  2. What a place to be–so many wonderful smells on hand and a charm? one to make one charming? now there’s a thought. Fran

  3. Can’t wait to get there!

  4. Wonderful images, Heather. I love the colours you have used. And, in the lower picture, the woman with the chicken. I’m sure that drawing/painting people must be the most difficult thing to do…you seem to do it effortlessly. You are good.

  7. “Darn, I’ve just got to get out of this volcano so I can visit the hot springs,” I thought. These images stir my imagination — just what is needed for me to get the courage to escape the demon.
