Traveller’s Lament
January 3, 2008One step, two steps; maybe more.
How many steps ‘til I find the door?
Will it be red, or green, or blue?
Will it be old or shiny and new?
How will I know, when will I see?
Will it be gently calling me?
Inside or outside, country or town?
Must I look up or keep my eyes down?
So many places I can spy
I’m so frightened I’ll pass it by.
One step, two steps; maybe more,
How many steps ‘til I reach the door?

Curiosity is so captivating, especially in preparation for the journey. Love the poem!
I love this. And the song from Willy Wonka: perfect.
Speaking of snozberries, the best quote from the movie comes right Verruca questions their existence. “We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams.” In looking it up today, I learned that it is actually a quote from the poet Arthur O’Shaughnessy. It’s so appropriate to what we do here, especially when encountered with people who don’t see our own snozberries.
I agree- Willie Wonka is perfect in so many ways. Oh, and Chefleur, if that door is grass green, arched, carved, and has dragons around the central doorknob, be really, really careful, would you? Sometimes it doesn’t lead to the best places (always an adventure, of course, guaranteed every time, but not always the nicest sort!)
Ooooh this is lovely - great poem of anticipation..I enjoyed it thank you.
For some reason I just thought of avoiding walking on the cracks. Maybe there is sound logic for this - slipping through the cracks and all that
Nice poem
Very inspiring and evocative.
Lovely sense of anticipation
